Welcome to the launch of the new Disrupt Bahamas website and our first blog post. We created this blog to give individuals the platform to respectfully and appropriately share their stories, ideas and grievances. At Disrupt, we are focused on youth empowerment and community development, as a result, our content will be mainly geared towards those areas. However, we do encourage and support those wishing to engage in dialogues on other subjects.
Why did we choose to include the word 'disrupt' in our name? We have been asked this question numerous times since the organization officially launched in January. To be clear, we are not trying to align ourselves with the negative connotation behind the word disrupt. Instead, we are attempting to look at generational issues from new vantage points and strategize innovative solutions. We hope to disrupt the cycle of violence, poverty and other deeply rooted matters that have plagued our society. Disrupt Bahamas is not a conventional organization, our actions and behaviour will always mirror that.
We are focused on creating new opportunities and resources to support millennials in the Bahamas. Our Ohana Program helps to prepare students for post-high school life by connecting them with young professionals in their area of interest. Our ‘Helping Hands’ Program provides basic household items, which hopefully helps to relieve some stress in the home. Disrupt Bahamas organizes conferences, workshops and seminars geared towards spreading awareness about and generating solutions to matters that affect the Bahamas. We are currently working on a few other projects that will target specific groups within our society and will be announcing our plans soon.
The type of change we are attempting to bring about requires the cooperation and support from a large portion of society. We encourage those who find that our mission connects with them to become a member of Disrupt Bahamas. Let's open doors so that others can walk through them.
